Buffalo Grove couple robbed of $60,000 in valuables

Buffalo Grove Police are warning residents to be on guard after an elderly couple was duped by a person posing as a fence installer while an accomplice sneaked into their home and stole $60,000 in valuables.

Police said a Hispanic man driving a full-size panel van pulled up to the couple’s home on the 600 block of Checker Drive in Buffalo Grove Tuesday and told them he was going to build a fence in the rear of their yard and needed to see the property line.

Once the homeowners walked him to the property line, an accomplice entered the home and stole an extensive silver coin collection from the den and ten gold rings from a bedroom, according to police. The valuables were estimated to be worth $60,000.

In late February a Buffalo Grove couple living on Twin Oaks Court was robbed in an almost exact manner.

Jewelry was taken from an upstairs bedroom after a Hispanic man walked the residents to the backyard where he told them he was going to build a fence, according to police.

In both cases the man spoke with someone in Spanish on his cellphone while in the backyard with the victims, according to police.

Police are asking residents to reach out to senior neighbors and talk to them about the type of “ruse” burglaries going on in the area, and to call 911 if anything seems suspicious.
