Batavia Main Street to stage Shakespeare comedy

Batavia Main Street, in conjunction with All Dressed Up Costumes and in cooperation with the Batavia Park District, will continue the Shakespeare on Clark program this summer with “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”
The play features a colorful cast of characters in one of Shakespeare’s most produced comedies. Sir John Falstaff, a plump knight of questionable morals, gets more than he bargains for when he simultaneously attempts to seduce two wealthy married women to gain a portion of their money.
Upon receiving identical copies of Falstaff’s love letters, the two women, Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, scheme to teach the fat knight a good lesson.
Auditions for this production will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15; 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 16; and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21.
The cast consists of four lead female roles and 14 male roles of all ages. Additional actors can be incorporated in the production. The auditions will consist of cold readings from the script as, well as some physical improv. This is an open audition and appointments are not necessary. Rehearsals will be schedule around cast member availability. The auditions will be held in the Jester’s Courtyard of All Dressed Up Costumes, the second floor of the Campana building, 901 N. Batavia Ave., in Batavia.
The production will take place on Clark Island, which is on the Fox River, just south of Wilson Street. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 6 p.m. Sundays, July 29 to Aug. 14. The production is outdoors and audience members should bring lawn chairs.
