Misinformation spread on sex education
David E. Smith falsely reported what is contained in the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States curriculum. There is no “how to” in the curriculum. There is no encouraging of experimenting with sexual behavior and homosexuality. There is education on reproductive health and human reproductive biology. And, yes, birth control will be covered, and well it should, as approximately 40,000 teenagers gave birth last year. Mr. Smith should be concerned over the glamorizing of teens having children with movies and reality TV shows that make teen mothers look romantic and special. The facts are far less stellar. Teen moms are less likely to get a higher education, are more likely to be on welfare. Education has been shown to lower teen pregnancy rates and put off sexual activity. Parents should be aware of the curriculum their children will be taught and use that as a basis for conversation within the family.
