Antioch’s Tiffany truly an athletic gem

Lauren Tiffany is an athlete for all seasons — well, three seasons anyway.

Tiffany has accomplished a lot playing volleyball, basketball and soccer the past four years and she is one of the top students academically in her class at Antioch High School.

Now, as Tiffany’s senior season hits the home stretch, she is realizing how much she has accomplished during her stellar high school athletic career.

“I’ve got 9 or 10 varsity letters,” said Tiffany, who was promoted to varsity as a freshman in both volleyball and soccer and started playing varsity basketball as a sophomore.

“I guess I’ve been used to it all this time,” said Tiffany, who is the daughter of recently retired Warren wrestling coach Mark Tiffany. “I really wouldn’t know what to do if I wasn’t playing sports.”

Tiffany’s knack for playing multiple sports harks back to when she was younger and she participated in five or six sports at one time — including ice hockey, track, cheerleading and a stint of playing tennis,

Tiffany’s been a big part of a the Sequoits young soccer team this spring.

The Sequoits (3-11) lost 7-0 to host Lake Forest Academy (10-2-1) in a nonconference game Thursday afternoon in Lake Forest.

Tiffany has performed the role of stopper on defense this season after a brief stint in the midfield last year. But her bigger role has been leading the younger players.

“We have a real good work ethic,” Tiffany said. “It may not look like it on the field We’re just not that skilled, but we do work real hard out there and we’re dedicated.”

“She’s one of the captains and works real hard out there,” said Sequoits coach Hanna Drye. “(Tiffany) wins a lot of balls in the air and keeps the defense organized. We wouldn’t have half the defense without Lauren there. Part of it is her experience and she’s a fierce person.

“We do have several people out with injuries right now. We’re just having a hard time putting a team together right now.”

Tiffany plans to attend the University of Illinois in Champaign this fall to study engineering. As for sports, Tiffany might take a shot at club basketball.
