Chicago Fire signs striker
Fire officials never said they were content with the club’s roster.
On Wednesday they announced the signing of 20-year-old Colombian striker Cristian Nazarit on a free transfer. Nazarit last played for Colombian Primera A side Independiente Santa Fe.
“He has good size,” Fire coach Carlos de los Cobos said of the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Nazarit. “He’s a tall guy, he’s strong, he’s a forward. A No. 9-like striker. He’s got a very strong shot. He has good pace. These qualities are very good for this league.”
“He’s good with his back to goal,” added technical director Frank Klopas. “He’s physically strong but also has the pace to get behind the defense. Very good in the box, good in the air. Also very strong shooting ability from the outside. Just some different characteristics and qualities that he brings and which will be good for the team.”
De los Cobos said he does not expect Nazarit to play in Saturday night’s match against Vancouver. Nazarit is expected to join the club Thursday.
There were Internet rumors over the winter linking Nazarit to Chelsea and Real Madrid.
“I don’t know,” Klopas said. “There are rumors everywhere. I’m sure as a young player that has good qualities and has scored goals, who knows? I couldn’t tell you that. I’m just glad that he’s coming here.”
The Fire moved midfielder Marko Maric to the disabled list with a left deltoid sprain suffered at Portland on April 14. Maric has not practiced since.
The Fire (1-3-3, 6 points) has scored 10 goals in its first seven games, 4 by forward Diego Chaves.
