Arlington Hts. Senior Center promotes fitness day

The Arlington Heights Senior Center will join an estimated 1,000 local events to celebrate the 18th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day Wednesday, May 25.

As an official host site, the Arlington Heights Senior Center will host a variety of free services, including blood pressure checks, complimentary massages from Harper College’s Massage Therapy School and zumba gold, tai chi and chair yoga demonstrations conducted by park district staff. A complimentary breakfast will be served between 8:30-10 a.m.

The highlight of the morning will include a short fitness walk, kicking off at 8:45 a.m. Attendees will have an opportunity to demo health and fitness websites with library staff.

Catholic Charities NW Senior Services will offer information and consultations on everything from grandparents raising grandchildren to caregiving resources. Entertainment by The Chordmasters, a barbershop quartet, will get started at 12:15 p.m.

Closing ceremonies at 1:15 p.m. will include prize basket giveaways. A special lunch will be served between 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and requires advance reservations. The last day to sign up and pay for lunch is Friday, May 20.

On this day, the Arlington Heights Senior Center will join with an estimated 100,000 seniors across the country expected to help promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventive care.

According to Karie Van Grinsven, “Our patriotic-themed fitness day event is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness.”

The event is open to the public and most of the offerings are free, except cholesterol screenings and the lunch. Other than lunch, no reservations are needed. The program will run from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
