Libertyville’s Barton learns to excel at Eastern Illinois
Troy Barton was an all-area and all-North Suburban player when he was a captain for coach Jim Schurr’s Libertyville baseball team two years ago.
Now a sophomore at Eastern Illinois, Barton is majoring in secondary education and is one of the top hurlers in the Ohio Valley Conference.
He completed the month of April with seven mound appearances in which he posted an ERA of 2.34. Highlights included a win over Illinois and a strong performance against Missouri when he struck out five consecutive Tiger batters.
Barton leads all Eastern Illinois starting pitchers with a 4.45 ERA, and is one of the leading pitchers in the conference in strikeouts per game. He has 35 for the season.
Ÿ Augustana freshman starter Brian Konecke (Lakes) went seven solid innings to get a 12-6 win over North Central.
Augustana freshman first baseman Pat Wilson (Stevenson) is batting .381 and leads the team in at-bats (139), hits (53), doubles (10), RBI (31) and total bases (63). Sophomore shortstop Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central) leads with 32 runs scored, 3 triples and 11 stolen bases.
Football camp
The 18th annual Libertyville Wildcat Football Skills camp will be taking place on June 27, 28, and 29 from 9 a.m. to noon at Butler Lake Park.
The camp is for any youth interested in attending a camp that concentrates on football skills development. Libertyville coach Randy Kuceyeski will direct the camp for youths that are 8-13 years old. The staff will be comprised of the current Libertyville football staff members as well as current and past players. For more information call Kuceyeski at (847) 549-6149. The cost of the three day camp is $70.
College commitments
Two Libertyville senior football players will continue their playing careers at the collegiate level next fall.
Defensive lineman Matt Gilbert has signed a letter of intent to play at Robert Morris University in Chicago. Teddy Kelley, a defensive back and kick returner, will continue his career at Wheaton College.
Both players have been starters for the Wildcats the past two seasons.
Military recognition
On the night of its football game with Barrington, Friday, Aug. 26, Libertyville High School would like to recognize any former football players that have served in the Armed Forces or are currently serving in the military.

Libertyville High School camps
A variety of athletic summer camps are being offered at Libertyville High School. Some of the camp offerings are: basketball, lacrosse, softball, tennis and are offered for third graders through high school aged students. Recruitment night
Grayslake Central will be hosting the second annual College Football Recruitment Night on Wednesday.
Lemont High School will be hosting its ninth annual College Football Recruitment Night on Thursday.
The Football Recruitment Night is designed to provide an opportunity for college coaches to discuss the recruitment class of 2012 with the North & South suburban high school football coaches.
Men’s golf
Six former St. Viator golfers are playing on the Division I circuit this school year.
Ÿ Senior Taylor Krug of Monmouth University tied for 19th at the St. Mary’s Invitational with a 154.
Ÿ Senior Phil Makowski of Northern Ohio University tied for T16 at the OAC Invite.
Ÿ Sophomore Matt Vitale of Butler University has had two top 5’s and three top 10’s this year.
Ÿ Freshman Joe Carlson of Villanova has a tie for 23rd with a 148 (+6) at the Navy Fall Classic.
Ÿ Freshman Brad Klune of Boston College recorded a tie for seventh in the Northeast D-1 Championships with a 149 (+7).
Ÿ Freshman Danny Stringfellow of Auburn University posted a tie for fifth at the Bluegrass Invite with a 217 (+7).
Soccer
Former all-state Buffalo Grove soccer player Scott Wallner has won a starting position with the Quad City Eagles of the National Premier Soccer League.
Wallner was a four-year starter and two-time CCIW all-conference selection for Augustana College.
The Eagles compete in the Midwest division of the semi-pro league against teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois including a team from the Chicago Fire soccer club.
Women’s track and field
Augustana sophomore Sarahbeth Jones (Warren) was a member of the distance medley team that placed 14th overall with a time of 12:37.76 at the Drake Relays.
Men’s track and field
Augustana senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein) was a member of the 3200-relay team that turned in a time of 7:48.87 and finished 10th overall at the Drake Relays In Des Monies, Iowa. It was the fastest time of the year in that event for the Vikings.
Ÿ Augustana senior Brendan Bradley (Mundelein) took third place (57.00) in the 400 intermediate hurdles and fourth (15.87) in the 110 high hurdles.
