Kittens coming to Save-A-Pet

To welcome the annual kitten season, Save-A-Pet No-Kill Adoption Center will host its 12th annual Kitten Shower on Saturday, May 7.

The event, which will run from noon to 2 p.m. at the adoption center at 31664 N. Fairfield Road, Grayslake, will include games, crafts, guest speakers, lunch and refreshments. Children accompanied by adults are welcome.

Save-A-Pet staff, volunteers and experienced foster families will answer questions about caring for kittens in their initial days and weeks of life. Foster care is crucial to the well-being of the kittens.

Some elements of kitten care often require constant and detailed attention. Although they have weaker immune systems, many kittens are fostered in homes with multiple animals. The key is to make sure they are kept in a separate room (a bathroom or small closet) and away from other animals in the household.

The Save-A-Pet Kitten Shower also functions as a fundraiser to support the in-house and foster care of incoming kittens. Donations of funds and supplies will be accepted. Requested supplies to support the care of the kittens include Snuggle Safes (microwaveable heat disks), kitten nursing bottles, and kitten food.

Other supplies that are needed include Pine Litter and Friskies canned cat food. Supplies can be purchased at pet stores as well as online via Amazon.com and Target.com (donors can search using the keyword sapkittenshower). Direct links to Save-A-Pet online wish lists can be found at www.saveapetil.org. Supporters who cannot attend the Kitten Shower can ship supply donations directly to Save-A-Pet.

“Kitten Season is always very exciting,” board President Greg Alloian said in a news release. “Staff and volunteers always love seeing the little faces and their little paws. Families in surrounding communities looking to add an adorable kitten to their family should really attend Save-A-Pet’s Kitten Shower. It’s a great learning experience, a great way to support our work to prepare the kittens for adoption, and a great way to meet other cat lovers.”
