Mundelein seeks service projects, volunteers
Volunteers from local businesses, residents, students and various organizations are asked to join Project Creating a Positive Environment, the village of Mundelein, and the Mundelein Police Department on May 28 for A-May-Zing Mundelein.
The annual C.A.P.E. event provides volunteers with the opportunity to show they care by helping residents, especially senior citizens, with various household chores, from cleaning gutters to washing windows, mowing lawns, planting flowers or vegetables, pulling weeds and other cleaning projects.
This year, the Mundelein Fire Department has volunteered to do some minor exterior home repairs including: repairs to broken gates, loose steps, rotten deck boards, loose railings, broken door locks and broken light fixtures.
The fire department has also offered to perform a smoke detector inspection, which would include replacing any bad batteries or detectors at no cost to the homeowner.
In 2010, volunteers also cleaned up litter in several common areas of the village. Last year, 212 volunteers completed more than 47 projects.
Groups, families and individuals are encouraged to get involved in this “Day Of Caring.”
“The seniors really appreciate the extra help doing chores that are difficult for them. We need everyone to come out. It’s great to spend the day helping others” Police Chief Raymond J. Rose said.
Mayor Kenneth Kessler said Mundelein is a close-knit community of people who like to help others. This event is one example of the way residents go out of their way to help others, he added.
Members of the community who wish to volunteer, residents in need of assistance, or those who have project suggestions should call (847) 968-3770.
The number of projects completed is dependent on the number of volunteers who turn out for the event, organizers said. The goal for Project C.A.P.E. is to exceed the 212 volunteers who assisted last year.
Youth volunteers ages 8 to 17 must obtain a waiver form and have it signed by a parent before they are allowed to participate in the program.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. A continental breakfast and refreshments are provided to all volunteers for their efforts. Projects should be completed by 1 p.m.
