Man arrested in Elgin on warrants
Elgin police assisted in the investigation and arrest Friday of a man wanted on several warrants who they said is a known gang member.
Jose L. Melendez, 21, was found hiding with his girlfriend and baby daughter in a relative’s apartment in the 200 block of Douglas Ave., Elgin, police said. Melendez refused to leave the apartment for about an hour but eventually surrendered without incident, Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said.
Melendez was charged with possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a weapon by a gang member, Olafson said. He being held in Kane County jail and his next court date is May 4.
He also had an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant, police said.
Police said they were led to Melendez during an investigation into a shooting Wednesday in an apartment complex in the 300 block of Ann Street, South Elgin, in which no one was injured. The investigation of the shooting, which occurred during an altercation between rival gang members, continues, police said.
