White Sox’ Cora: We didn’t deserve to win
Instead of “All In,” the White Sox’ new slogan should say: “Maybe We’ll Play in May.”
Or something like that.
The miserable opening month continued Friday night at U.S. Cellular Field when the Sox jumped to an early 3-0 lead only to be buried by Baltimore 10-4.
Having now lost 13 of their last 16, the Sox realize the early calendar is no longer playing in their favor.
“If we go like this too much longer, it isn’t early,” starter John Danks said after falling to 0-4. “That’s a fact.”
It’s also a fact the White Sox deserve to be 10-17.
They continued their sloppy play against Baltimore when Danks allowed Matt Wieters’ 2-run homer in the sixth inning on a 3-0 pitch after striking out Mark Reynolds but allowing him to reach first base on a wild pitch.
In the seventh, shortstop Alexei Ramirez’s sixth error of the young season wound up costing reliever Jesse Crain and the Sox 4 unearned runs.
Afterward, acting manager Joey Cora didn’t mince words.
“We didn’t deserve to win, it’s that simple,” Cora said. “We have earned wherever it is we are at. It’s been collective, not only one guy messing up. It’s been the whole team and the coaching staff.”
Peavy update:With the deadly storms that tore through his home state of Alabama weighing on his mind, Jake Peavy went out and pitched well in a rehab start with Class AAA Charlotte Friday night.Throwing 85 pitches, the right-hander worked 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits. Peavy had 8 strikeouts and didn#146;t issue a walk.#147;I gave up a few runs, a 2-run homer late, but I made a lot of good pitches,#148; Peavy said. #147;I couldn#146;t feel any better stuff-wise. I thought I was much better than I#146;ve been in the past. I feel better than I have in quite some time.#148;Charlotte is off Wednesday, the next day Peavy is scheduled to pitch. He could make a start for Class AA Birmingham.#147;Hopefully, I have one or two more before I come back,#148; said Peavy, who will be checked out by the White Sox Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field. #147;I#146;d like to go in five days and I expect my body to respond. I#146;ll just take it in stride.#148;As for the deadly weather in Alabama, Peavy is just glad it#146;s over.#147;All my family members are alive and well,#148; he said. #147;But it#146;s been a rough go for the people in my home state. We#146;re doing some things to help with the Red Cross.#148;Injury update:Slumping center fielder Alex Rios (.158) didn#146;t play Friday as he deals with a sore left toe.Rios is expected to be back in the lineup as early as Saturday.#147;Rios could have played today, it#146;s just a little hard to deal with that,#148; manager Ozzie Guillen said.Reliever Tony Pena came out of Thursday#146;s game at New York with discomfort in his elbow, but an MRI was #147;clean#148; and he is not expected to go on the disabled list.
