Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in North Chicago

Celebrate Mexico’s rich cultural heritage at the Lake County Forest Preserve District’s 10th annual Cinco de Mayo festival.

Enjoy live music, dancing, games and children’s activities at this free family event set for Sunday, May 1, at the Greenbelt Forest Preserve, Shelter B, in North Chicago. Activities will run from 1 to 6 p.m.

Entertainment highlights include music by the band Super Rayo, traditional dances by Erandi Folkloric Dancers and Aztec Dancers, mariachi singing by Francisco Martinez and performances by local students. There also will be mambo dance demonstrations and lessons.

A variety of children’s activities will be offered, including face painting, nature exploration activities, games and contests with prizes, Bolita the clown, and arts and crafts led by the Girl Scouts. Youth soccer games will be presented by Lake County Soccer League.

The event is sponsored by Fortune Motor Group, Great Lakes Credit Union and Pace Suburban Bus.

Great Lakes Credit Union is sponsoring a coloring contest with prizes. Stop by their table for forms and art materials.

Admission and activities are free. Mexican food, corn dogs, kettle corn, lemonade and ice cream will be available for purchase.

Visitors will be invited throughout the day to enter raffles to win prizes.

The Greenbelt Forest Preserve, Shelter B, is across the street from the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road, just south of Belvidere Road.
