Holocaust play at Raupp Museum

The Raupp Museum in Buffalo Grove will host its first theater event April 28-May 1. The play is “Number the Stars,” Lois Lowry’s classic tale of the rescue of the Danish Jews during the Holocaust.

The novel centers on 10-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen. When the Johansens learn of Nazi deportation plans for the Danish Jews, they readily agree to take in Ellen and pretend she is Annemarie’s sister. The story then follows the Johansen family’s role in the Danish resistance efforts to transfer the Rosens as well as other Jewish citizens to the safety of Sweden.

Inspired by the story, the museum will also be featuring a flat-panel exhibit about local figures that changed history by acting in ethical or tolerant manners.

The play is being produced by Buffalo Grove Park District’s Big Deal Productions. Performance are at 7 p.m. nightly Thursday through Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $10 in advance at the Alcott Center at 530 Bernard Drive. Advance tickets are recommended; the theater only seats 90 people.

Tickets are $12 at the door. The Raupp Museum is at 901 Dunham Lane, phone (847) 459-2318. For information or to reserve tickets, call Lindsay Grandt at (847) 850-2132.
