Senator’s wife to speak at Judson Prayer Breakfast

Community members are invited to attend Judson University’s annual Prayer Breakfast Wednesday, May 4, to hear Berlean Miller Burris, academic, community volunteer and wife of former Illinois Sen. Roland W. Burris.

The breakfast will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in Judson’s Betty Lindner Campus Commons, 1151 N. State St., Elgin.

This annual event attracts hundreds of business leaders, church members, volunteers, public safety and service personnel as Judson recognizes the services of community leaders and organizations, safety personnel and national service organizations for their contributions.

Burris has had dual careers in nursing and theological education. She has earned numerous awards and fellowships, as well as degrees from Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University of Chicago and Moody Theological Seminary.

Her career, which included administrative and teaching roles, was most rewarding when she was able to inspire integrity and excellence in her students. Her publications focused on empowering educationally disadvantaged and minority students. She continues to serve the citizens of Chicago through community efforts.

Most recently, Burris’ new book, “Just Stand: God’s Faithfulness Never Fails,” follows her journey when her husband was appointed to the U.S. Senate and experienced political attacks on his personal integrity. Burris’ experience of silently taking the public affronts brought a transformational moment where she affirmed the foundation of family, faith and a year of public service to stand for something greater than herself.

Also during the breakfast, Judson University will recognize a local volunteer with the D. Ray Wilson Service Award. Nominees will be announced on Judson’s website, JudsonU.edu.

Other program participants will include the Rev. Henoch Fuentes, Elgin police chaplain; Capts. Fred and Nancy Mead of The Salvation Army; Nancy Schueneman; Marco Alvarez, president/CEO of Fabric Images; and Teri Stein, Judson University.

Tickets are $16 and table sponsorships are available for $350, which includes a table for eight and recognition in the program. Reserve your seat by Monday, April 25, by visiting JudsonU.edu/prayerbreakfast or calling (847) 628-1119.
