Girls soccer / Lake County roundup
Grayslake North’s girls soccer team found itself trailing Richmond-Burton three minutes into the teams’ tournament finale at Lakes on Saturday morning.
“(It) was not the ideal way to begin the game and really put us in a tough spot early on,” Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. “However, our girls showed some real character and determination to not allow the start of the game to dictate the rest of the game.”
Grayslake North wound up winning 3-2 in penalty kicks.
Sophomore Jaclyn Brennan scored both regulation goals for the Knights (4-5). Senior Chloe Basa set up the first goal with a corner kick to the far post, where Brennan knocked in a volley to pull Grayslake North even at the half.
Junior Maggie Stojak set up Brennan’s second goal, as Brennan beat a defender before slotting a shot to the far corner.
But Richmond-Burton scored the equalizer with about five minutes left in regulation.
The game went immediately to PKs. Knights junior keeper Brooke Sauer made 3 saves, while Lyz Steinhoff, Katie McGrath and Andrea Lamb found the back of the net for Grayslake North.
Lakes 2, Woodstock 0: Sarina Umlauf and Leah Baker scored for the tournament hosts. Anne-Marie Brugioni and Rebecca Hill had assists for Lakes (3-8), which scored a goal in each half.
Carmel 1, Mundelein 0: Meegan Johnston scored the nonconference game’s only goal off an assist from Ashley Orth.
Carmel improved to 6-4-1, while Mundelein fell to 6-6-1.
Lake Forest 3, Lake Zurich 0: The host Scouts dropped the Bears’ record to 5-6-1.
