Mundelein’s Carmel Catholic to stage ‘Chicago’

It’s the Roaring Twenties, where booze and jazz reign.

That’s the setting for “Chicago,” the sharp-edged Broadway musical satire that features a dazzling score by Kander and Ebb, which sparked the immortal choreography of Bob Fosse.

Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein is producing “Chicago” this week in the high school auditorium. A special $5 show will be performed at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26. Other performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1.

Tickets are $10 general admission (assigned seating on the main floor) and $5 for students.

Starring Natalie Masini and Paula Castanos, the story begins when Roxie Hart, enraged that her lover is leaving, shoots him. She convinces her hapless husband, Amos, to take the rap ... until he finds out he’s been duped.

In the Cook County Jail, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess,” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American dream: fame, fortune and acquittal.

This production is the work of Carmel Catholic’s Fine Arts Department, with the involvement of the Carmel Catholic Council for the Arts, a unified parent support group made up of parent volunteers from all four arts disciplines.

In the Fine Arts Department, students who are interested in excellence in theater and the arts participate in plays, musicals and instrumental and choral presentations throughout the school year.

Not only do they learn to sing, act and perform, but also they are given the opportunity to learn lighting, set design, staging and promotion for a well-rounded fine arts education experience.

Carmel Catholic High School is at One Carmel Parkway, Mundelein. For details, visit www.carmelhs.org or call (847) 388-3450.
