Standing firm not necessarily good

I just read the “Bush ticket a dream” article. As a Vietnam Veteran, I have only admiration for Jose Guerrero and his four sons and their service to our country.

However, I did have a couple of thoughts after finishing the story. Apparently, even though this man has dedicated 26 years of his life, and quite possibly put his life on the line for our country, he only gets to meet his hero because someone came up with $5,000. I guess all his service doesn’t really mean anything without some cash.

I was also bothered by the quote attributed to Guerrero, “In this day and age, right or wrong, in my opinion, he stood firm for what he believed in.” If the criteria for admiring someone is whether they stood firm for what thay believed in, regardless whether it was right or wrong, should one admire Adolph Hitler because he stood firm in his belief that the Jews should all be killed?

How about the people Guerrero was fighting — Islamic terrorists? They are certainly firm in their belief that all non-Islamics should be killed if they do not convert.

I don’t think so. Right is right, and wrong is wrong. As Archie Bunker would say, “Case closed.”
