Religion doesn’t belong in schools
This is in response to a March 29 letter by John Boelens, who seems to believe that creationism is fact and should be taught in school equally with the theory of evolution. The first issue with this is that creationism is religion and religious views should not be taught in school. Period.
The second issue is that there are so many different religions that if you taught one, you would have to teach them all, taking up valuable time for important subjects such as math and reading. The biggest issue is that not everyone believes in God or the Bible, or a higher being, including me.
Religion was created as a means to explain what could not be explained and to try to establish some sort of order. John says “ . . . evolution is not a proven fact.” Neither is the Bible, John, but there is so much evidence supporting the theory of evolution that anyone who doubts it is willfully ignorant.
Such support includes disease. The cold you get this year isn’t the same one you’ll get next year, whatever virus cells your body doesn’t kill reproduce and mutate. This happens with every illness you get. That’s why there’s a new flu shot every year. But I guess John can’t use antibiotics or immunizations because evolutions a theory.
You religious zealots preach love and acceptance then try to cram your beliefs down everyone else’s throats with no regard to their personal beliefs. How about you start practicing what you preach? Church does not belong in school.
