Cellphone-related crashes

The National Safety Council estimates that at least 1.6 million traffic crashes a year are caused by drivers using cellphones or texting — 28 percent of all crashes.

Here’s a look at some other statistics.

타 At least 1.4 million crashes involve a motorist using a cellphone. A range of 200,000 to 1 million are caused by a driver who is texting.

타 An estimated 11 percent of drivers are using a cellphone at any one time.

타 Driving and talking on a cellphone increases the risk of crashing by four times.

타 The cost of cell-phone-related crashes is estimated at $43 billion, according to the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis.
