Local Girls Needed to Defy Stereotypes!
Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is looking for local girls entering 4-5th grades to participate in a day camp designed to change stereotypes of girls and women in the media. The aMUSE Journey Day Camp will be July 18-22, 12-5:30 p.m., at Fox River Country Day School, 1600 Dundee Avenue, in Elgin.
Using the aMUSE journey book, part of the It's Your Story - Tell It! Girl Scout leadership journey series, girls will:
Hear from local women who have defied stereotypes
Participate in an art workshop and make positive self-portraits
Attend a dance workshop (State Street Dance)
Take an acting workshop (Metropolis Performing Arts Centre)
Cultivate a healthy body image contrasted with images portrayed in the media
Girls will examine how women are portrayed stereotypically in the media and decide how they can change it with a Take Action! project. Girls will determine the stereotype they want to change and then choose a medium to tell their story, such as illustrating a comic book, performing a play, producing a movie, creating a mural, choreographing a dance, or writing a song. Then, girls will share that story with their community.
Registration begins May 1 online at www.girlscoutsni.org (under For Girls/Program Events). Deadline for registration is July 1. Day camp cost is $30 per girl, and includes aMUSE journey book, aMUSING snack each day, and three journey awards (girls must attend all five days to receive all awards). For more information, contact Brooke Radford at 847-741-5521, Ext. 7147, or via e-mail at bradford@girlscoutsni.org.
