NU-Stanford agree to football series

Northwestern and Stanford have agreed to a four-game football series beginning 2019, NU Director of Athletics Jim Phillips announced today.

The announcement comes on the heels of last week’s two-game series commitment with Notre Dame.

“We’re thrilled to add another tremendous institution like Stanford to our future nonconference schedules,” said Phillips. “Having Stanford on our future schedules, along with Notre Dame, Boston College, California, Syracuse and Vanderbilt, makes this an exciting time to be a fan of Chicago’s Big Ten football team.”

Northwestern and Stanford have played six times previously, with the last meeting coming in 1994, a wild and memorable 41-41 tie with the then-No. 24-ranked Cardinal in Evanston. The two schools played their first football game in 1933.

The first game in the series is scheduled to take place in Evanston on Sept. 14, 2019. Northwestern will then head to Palo Alto the following year (Sept. 19, 2020) before playing in Evanston in 2021 (Sept. 18) and back in Palo Alto in 2022 (Sept. 17).
