Cops say man threatened to shoot wife, stepson
Kane County Sheriff’s deputies seized a handgun, five rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition Saturday from a home in unincorporated Rutland Township where, they say, a man threatened to shoot his wife and adult stepson.
Huntley, Pingree Grove and Hampshire police departments assisted in getting David A. Hagen, 53, out of his home without firing any shots, Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.
Police responded just after midnight Saturday to the 40W800 block of Big Timber Road in Rutland Township. Hagen had already hit his wife in the head with a handgun, Gengler said.
Officers formed a perimeter around the house and closed off Big Timber Road between Powers and Manning roads for about 45 minutes until they were able to persuade Hagen to leave the home, Gengler said.
“These things can sometimes get really bad and really ugly,” Gengler said. “Luckily this one, our guys did a really good job up there.”
Hagen’s wife was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin and treated for non–life—threatening injuries.
Hagen was arrested and charged with unlawful restraint and aggravated domestic battery — both felonies — as well as aggravated assault and domestic battery, which are misdemeanors.
Hagen appeared in bond call Saturday morning where bail was set at $500,000. Hagen is next due in court at 9 a.m. April 21 in St. Charles.
