Downers Grove business owner indicted
The owner of a Downers Grove construction company was indicted on charges of filing false federal individual income tax returns and underreporting his business’ income.
Federal prosecutors have charged Robert W. Conforti, Sr., 63, of Downers Grove with underreporting his income by more than $864,000 over a two-year period, while also not paying additional taxes totaling more than $260,000, according to federal indictment filed Thursday. He also is charged with two counts of filing false tax returns.
Prosecutors say Conforti provided false records to an accountant who prepared his tax returns in 2004 and 2005. Those records showed his company’s gross receipts to be “substantially underreported” while its expenses were overstated by hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Conforti faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
