Passengers at fault, not flight attendants

I disagree with columnist Chuck Goudie’s implication that the folksy flight attendants on Southwest Airlines do not properly inform passengers of safety procedures. Has he flown on Southwest recently? Well, I just did twice during the past week. I can tell you that my visual observation showed many more people paying attention to the instructions since it was not the rote, monotonous type you hear on other airlines. Moreover, when I’ve flown on other airlines, I certainly believe fewer passengers pay attention to these details.

Two of the three quotes Mr. Goudie writes from passengers were not that they didn’t know what to do, but that they were physically unable to because of the cabin decompression caused by the hole in the roof. I believe Mr. Goudie is off base comparing how safety instructions are delivered versus the fact that most people just don’t listen. And one more thing, my bags enjoyed the free flight.
