Health care law strengthens nation

As a young political activist, high school student, and product of Middle America, I wear my feelings on issues that affect my fellow citizens on my sleeve. Anyone will tell you that whether it is speaking out in support of middle-class tax cuts, increased funding for education, common-sense free trade agreements, or against the war in Iraq, my passion lies at the core of what it means to be American. When it comes to these mainstream political issues, I am willing to discuss in order to enhance our national discourse; it is the responsibility of the new generation.

However, one issue I will not compromise on is the health and welfare of my fellow Americans. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is groundbreaking, and it deserves this high praise because it does what lawmakers should have done 50 years ago: provides Americans with more freedom and control on their health care choices.

A year after this bill was signed into law, we have much to show for it. By rolling back this legislation, Republicans would add $1 trillion to the deficit and threaten to strike at the central ideals the people hold in the highest esteem.

So, at a time when the cornerstones of democracy are being fought for and debated all over the world, I believe it is our responsibility, lawmakers and citizens alike, to preserve this important piece of legislation. I think I speak for my entire generation when I say that the call of our country’s promise should be placed at the forefront over partisan calls for repeal of legislation that would hurt 32 million Americans.

The health of our country is at stake, and I consider it a moral obligation to preserve the vitality that is the America I know and love.
