Celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 11-16

Naperville Police Department's telecommunicators are preparing to observe National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week from Monday, April 11 through Saturday, April 16. Congress initiated this week in 1991 to nationally recognize dispatchers for their efforts.

Naperville annually recognizes a Telecommunicator of the Year and will present the award to this year's recipient at a ceremony taking place at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 11 in the Communications Center at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave.

“We are so fortunate to have such a highly skilled telecommunications staff in Naperville along with advanced technologies in order to provide the highest level of service to this community,” said Acting Communications Manager Kalah Considine. “This profession requires intense training and specific talent in order to excel at multi-tasking in a wide variety of stressful and ever-changing situations. Honoring the work of these individuals is important and we are happy to be able to do so.”

The annual ceremony will also celebrate this year's completion of an extensive renovation project in the Naperville Police Department Communications Center, upgrading the facility, 9-1-1 phone system, and radio consoles for both the Public Safety Answering Point and the City Dispatch Center.

With 26 telecommunicators and four supervisors, Naperville's 9-1-1 dispatch center is staffed to handle emergency and non-emergency phone calls and police/fire incidents.
