Northwestern sees record number of applications

Officials at Northwestern University in Evanston report they have received a record number of applications for fall admission.

The total number of applications is nearly 31,000. That's 12 percent higher than last year and nearly double the number received for fall 2005.

The flood of applicants meant only 18 percent were admitted this year, compared to 23 percent last year. The university says admittance letters have been sent.

The university says nearly 200 students were admitted to the Good Neighbor, Great University program, which provides significantly increased financial aid to incoming freshmen from public or private high schools in Evanston and Chicago.
