Celebrate National Volunteer Week with United Way

United Way of Elgin is ramping up awareness of local volunteer opportunities to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 10-16. Local non-profits have listed their opportunities on the United Way of Elgin website, and United Way encourages all of Elgin to visit the site at www.uwelgin.org/volunteer to see what opportunities are available.

“Area nonprofits need help, and we have a wide variety of opportunities for every interest, skill level, and age range, for both individuals or groups,” said Elissa Kojzarek, Resource Development and Special Initiatives Manager. “Our site is a place where people can see any opportunity available in the area.”

The United Way Volunteer Opportunities web page has opportunities that include tutoring, gardening, filing, painting, driving seniors, sorting food, and joining an advisory council. Opportunities come from a long list of local nonprofits, including PADS, Literacy Connection, One Hope United, Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army, Senior Services Associates and more.

“We want to encourage people to celebrate National Volunteer Week by taking the step to see which opportunities match their skills and interests,” said Kojzarek.

Site visitors can sign up for the opportunities or ask any questions through a contact form on the site. Area nonprofits can upload new opportunities at www.uwelgin.org/volunteer-add-opportunity. United Way of Elgin also can find a special project for very large groups, so businesses can contact the United Way office at (847) 741-2259 or e-mail Elissa Kojzarek at ekojzarek@uwelgin.org

United Way of Elgin will also be celebrating the week by sending thank you messages to United Way of Elgin supporters and by delivering cookies to Employee Campaign Managers at their Top 25 companies. ECMs volunteer to manage workplace campaigns at their businesses each year.

The cookies were donated by Herb's Bakery, Meijer, Super Target, and Chicago Gourmet Wholesale Bakery. Also, anyone who wears a United Way T-shirt on Friday and stops by the United Way of Elgin office at 1797 N. La Fox St. (Route 31) in South Elgin will receive a reusable grocery bag and will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Elgin Public House gift card.

“United Way of Elgin is excited to use this opportunity to say thank you to our supporters and to any Elgin volunteers, who show what it means to Live United by volunteering time and talent to help improve lives in the community throughout the year,” said Kojzarek.
