Antioch blaze destroys boat, camper

An Antioch garage fire spread to a family’s boat and camper in the driveway, leaving them totaled this afternoon.

Firefighters arrived at the scene about 100 yards from Cross Lake on the 200 block of Lakewood Drive around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and found a 2½-car garage in flames, Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon said.

A pile of vinyl siding in the garage fueled the blaze, causing it to flare and spread to the driveway, Nixon said.

The flames never reached the house but destroyed the family’s 18-foot boat and trailer camper, which were parked on the driveway. A portion of the home’s deck and a neighbor’s fence were charred.

The flames also put an end to the homeowner’s plans to re-side his home with the vinyl siding he was storing in the garage, Nixon said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the brunt of the fire. Nixon said the fire may have been caused by an electrical circuit, but investigators tonight were not certain of the exact cause.

Nixon said the total damage was estimated at $60,000.
