Gilberts voters OK sales tax hike

Gilberts residents — and visitors to the Kane County village — will pay more in sales tax when they shop at businesses in town.

Gilberts voters approved a 1 percentage-point increase in the sales tax rate by a landslide. The increase will enable the village to resurface streets in residential areas of the village, officials said.

With all precincts reporting, the sales tax measure passed 429 to 110, or 80 percent to 20 percent, according to unofficial results Tuesday.

While the vote totals may seem low, turnout in Gilberts was more than 16 percent, which was higher than the 13 percent average for all of Kane County.
