Elgin Township garbage consolidation approved

Voters living in unincorporated Elgin Township approved a joint garbage contract in Tuesday’s referendum with 53 percent in favor, based on an unofficial tally.

The township is hoping to negotiate one contract for the approximately 1,400 unincorporated households to reduce truck traffic as well as wear and tear on the roads.

The vote means the township can research the possibility. If the rate doesn’t save money, the plan won’t be put in place.
