Driver ends up in Des Plaines River

A car ended up submerged in the Des Plaines River in Gurnee Friday night, but the vehicle’s occupant was able to escape without injury.

The driver of a Ford Expedition SUV lost control of the vehicle as he traveled on Belvidere Road around 6:30 p.m., but it’s unclear exactly how it happened. The man got out of the car on his own before firefighters arrived, according to Battalion Chief Tim Tanner of the Gurnee Fire Department.

A tow truck extracted the car, which was about 4 feet submerged in the 5-foot-deep river, Tanner said.

Traffic in the area was tied up for about two hours.
