Buffalo Grove tops Dundee-Crown

Buffalo Grove’s baseball team took advantage of some Dundee-Crown miscues, but the Bison also used their bats just a bit. The Bison pounded out 13 hits and made the most of 6 walks, 2 hit batters, and 3 errors by the Chargers in a 12-2, six-inning nonconfence victory in Carpentersville Wednesday.

Catcher Tommy Ricciardi had 4 hits and 3 RBI for BG. Winning pitcher Andrew Van Wazer added 3 hits and drove in 3 more runs, and Jake Monson had a pair of doubles for Buffalo Grove.

The Bison broke a 2-2 tie with 4 runs in the fourth. They added 4 more in the fifth and 2 in the sixth to end the proceedings early.

Van Wazer hit 3 batters but walked none and struck out three in 5 innings.

“After the second inning, (Van Wazer) really settled down on the mound,” said BG coach Jeff Grybash. “All game he was first-pitch strike, first-pitch strike.

“Overall, we took advantage of mistakes they made. We knew overall they were a good baseball team. They just had a nice win over Hersey.”

Leadoff man Scott Nowicke gave the Chargers a lead when he tripled and scored on an error in the first inning. After the Bison took a 2-1 lead, Jake Romano drove in Erik Brewer to tie the game with the first of his 2 hits.

But the Bison broke the game open in the fourth, scoring 4 times with two outs. Van Wazer’s single drove in 2 runs and Ricciardi followed with a hit to score another run.

Buffalo Grove (3-2) struck again with two outs in the fifth, taking advantage of 2 hit batters, 2 walks and a dropped throw on a potential double play. Van Wazer and Ricciardi had the only 2 hits in the inning, again accounting for 3 runs.

It was a tough day all around for the Chargers, who fell to 2-2.

“We didn’t come ready to play,” said D-C coach Jon Sawyer. “We didn’t do a very good job defensively, didn’t do a very good job offensively, didn’t pitch particularly well.”

BG added 2 more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Trevor Myers and Michael Seery, giving it a 10-run margin.

Mike Lodi took the loss for D-C.
