Create law to ban funeral protests

I was disappointed by the ruling of the Supreme Court in protecting the protesters’ right of unrestricted free speech at hundreds of fallen soldiers’ funerals, but I do understand it. Most of the time the court rules correctly, and I believe it did so this time as well. And I believe my thoughts on this issue are shared by most of my fellow citizens.

However, these types of vile protest are totally inappropriate at any funeral. A family’s time of sorrow, whether the deceased be military, gay, white or a person of color, needs to be respected by everyone! A protester’s rights should not supersede those of anyone else.

If we believe the Constitution or a law is wrong, we can fix that. I call upon my federal representatives, Rep. Dold, Sen. Kirk and Sen. Durbin, to introduce either bipartisan legislation or a constitutional amendment to correct this grave injustice. I further call upon John, Harry, Nancy and Rich to put aside their partisan rhetoric and pass this legislation. It’s time they actually represent “we the people.”

There are many venues available in this country for public debate. Common sense, dignity and respect still have a place here as well.
