Demolition under way at last Cabrini high-rise

Demolition is under way at the last high-rise at Chicago's infamous Cabrini-Green public housing complex.

A wrecking ball began picking apart the remaining building Wednesday morning.

The last families were moved out in December and relocated to nearby public housing townhouses or private subsidized housing.

Cabrini-Green was built on Chicago's North Side starting in the 1940s. The complex was once home to thousands of people, but the buildings weren't well-maintained, and crime and drugs soon became rampant.

Still-standing low-rise townhouses are still considered part of Cabrini-Green.

The Chicago Housing Authority says Minneapolis-based Target Corp. has proposed building a new store at the site. The proposal was first reported by Skyline, a Chicago neighborhood publication.

A message left with Target wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.
