It's not what you see that's scary in 'Insidious,' it's what you don't see

James Wan and Leigh Whannel are the filmmaking duo responsible for creating the gory “Saw” horror films, one of the most successful genre series in history.

Their newest collaboration, “Insidious,” harks back to the more atmospheric thrillers where what's not seen comes off much scarier than what is.

Two things struck me when I met Wan and Whannel, longtime best friends from Australia, at Chicago's Park Hyatt Hotel.

One: Wan doesn't like knives in real life.

Two: Wan and Whannel don't take themselves seriously. In fact, they've got a splendid comedy act worked up for feature reporters.
