Slaughter rallies for win
The Chicago Slaughter (3-1) fought its way back against the Kent Predators (1-3) to earn 37-36 victory on Friday night at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
Receiver Shatone Powers sparked the offense with a 56-yard touchdown return and made a shoestring catch with less than a minute left in the game to secure the victory. Powers finished with 5 catches for 78 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Quarterback Anthony Kopp, subbing for CJ Bacher in the third quarter, rallied the Slaughter to the triumph.
The Slaughter travels to play the Bloomington Extreme on April 1.
The next home game is Saturday, April 9th against the La Crosse Spartans.
The Slaughter took an early 3-0 lead on Chris Nendick’s 35-yard field goal. Nendick finished the first quarter scoring with a 53-yard field goal, the longest in team history, that tied the score at 6-6.
Trailing 18-6, the Slaughter rallied when Bacher completed a 6-yard touchdown pass to James Robinson.
Kopp found Powers for a 37-yard touchdown pass to put the Slaughter back up 31-30. With 25 seconds left in the game, Kopp connected with Powers for a 9-yard touchdown.
“We started off slow but we came back,” Powers said. “We made quick moves that paid off near the end of the game and we fought hard. We kept moving fast when we needed it, and came out with the win.
