Pi Day event taught wrong things

I was shocked and disgusted to read that the administrators, teachers and parents of Einstein Academy in Elgin allowed their third-grade students to throw pasta marinara pies at teacher Jason Smith to celebrate “Pi Day” and to raise funds for the school. This is not what I would expect from a school that markets itself as a private academy for gifted students.

Many homeless, hungry and disadvantaged individuals would have relished those pies as a meal. Instead, Einstein Academy chose this teachable moment to teach wasteful behavior.

For future celebrations of “Pi Day” I recommend the students participate in a more effective learning experience by serving the pasta marinara pies to members of a local homeless shelter. They will see firsthand how the need to feed the hungry is infinite — just like the number pi.
