Waste Management to begin recycling and waste collection in Deerfield
Deerfield residents are getting a new company to collect their garbage and recyclables starting in April.
Waste Management of Illinois will take over the weekly service with the delivery to Deerfield homes of new wheeled containers for trash and recyclables. The plastic carts -- one 96-gallon cart for refuse and a 64-gallon cart for recyclables -- will be distributed to residents at no cost to them between March 23d and 31st.
“We're ensuring that Deerfield residents receive high quality service that will save our residents money,” said Kent Street, Village Manager. “They will soon see clean-burning CNG waste and recycling trucks throughout Deerfield that will improve our community's environment and mean cleaner air.” The new service also will provide recycling opportunities for compact fluorescent light bulbs.
“We are excited to bring our range of services to Deerfield and help make it a greener, cleaner and more sustainable community,” said Steve Batchelor, Waste Management's Market Area Vice President. “We take great pride in the service we offer residents and in how we respond to our customers. We are looking forward to developing a strong partnership with Deerfield.”
“We are excited to introduce to Deerfield trucks fueled with compressed natural gas. They will reduce exhaust emissions, the reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to fresher air in Deerfield,” Batchelor said. “We plan to add CNG trucks each year until our entire Deerfield fleet is fueled by clean-burning natural gas.”
Each recycling cart will have a yellow lid containing instructions on acceptable recyclable materials. Carts will be available in 32-, 64- and 96-gallon sizes. Residents who wish to switch to a different cart size will have the opportunity to do so at no charge during the first 60 days of service. Afterward, they will incur a delivery charge of $40.
The Company will collect and recycle old waste and recycling containers from residents for the first two weeks of April. These should be placed at the curb with a note saying they are to be recycled. If no note is attached, the item will not be collected.
Yard waste will be collected from April 1st through December 15th. Yard waste must be placed in approved 30-gallon disposable paper bags or tied in bundles of brush, trimmings, tree and flower stalks not to exceed four feet in length, 30 inches in circumference or 50 pounds in weight. Yard waste stickers should be applied to each bag or bundle and may be purchased at Village Hall at 850 Waukegan Rd., Walgreen's at 780 Waukegan Rd., and the Jewel food store at 16 S. Waukegan Rd.
Residents may place for collection one bulk item per week per household at no charge. If a resident has more than one bulk item, he or she is asked to call Waste Management customer service at (800) 796-9696. Bulk items should be put at the curb on regular trash collection days. Bulk items may include furniture or something too large for a container. Waste Management will collect appliances, but residents are asked to call the Company in advance to schedule a pickup.
Waste Management will collect trash, recyclables and yard waste on the same day once a week between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Residents north of Deerfield Road will be served on Tuesdays and those south of Deerfield Road on Wednesdays.
Carts should be placed at the curb no earlier than sundown on the day before collection or no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection. Collection on Waukegan and Deerfield Roads must be out no later than 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. After collection, all carts should be removed from the front yard not later than the evening of your collection day.
Waste Management also is offering back-door service for an additional fee. Residents with questions are asked to call Waste Management customer service at (800) 796-9696.
