Oshkosh allows urban chickens

OSHKOSH, Wis. — City folks can raise chickens in Oshkosh — with their neighbors' permission.

The city council has voted to allow residents of single-family homes and duplexes to keep up to four chickens in a backyard enclosure.

Resident Justin Mitchell is among those opposed to requiring neighbors' consent. Mitchell says it's ridiculous to let his neighbors have that much control over his property. He suggests the city council add swimming pools, fire pits, ponds and ugly patios to the list for permission.

The Oshkosh Northwestern says chicken owners need an annual license from the city.
