Elgin police recognize their own

Ingenuity and dedication were most highly praised at an award ceremony Tuesday for some of the shining stars within Elgin’s police department.

Stevenson Jones received a Distinguished Service Commendation for his work responding to the criminal and safety concerns caused by foreclosed homes in Elgin neighborhoods.

“Officer Jones has worked diligently with city employees and property owners to maintain exteriors and provide more visually pleasing board-up options,” said Sgt. Jim Lally, who presented the award.

Lally said Jones has long been involved in community efforts for those in need.

Mike Kuta received the same award for his work organizing the bike rodeo in the Hunter’s Ridge community.

The team who helped bring the indoor cannabis grow operation to light between July and September 2010 were also recognized for their service.

“At the end of the day we’re really honoring people, we’re honoring their efforts and their idealism,” said Police Chief Jeff Swoboda.

Swoboda and other presenters gave awards and recognition to those with 20-year service anniversaries, top receivers of letters of appreciation and those celebrated as civilian, officer and manager of 2010 or the first quarter of 2011.

Swoboda presented the Officer of the Year Award to Leon Filas, liaison officer at Abbott Middle School, for his impeccable performance as a figure of safety, honesty and fairness. Lt. Glenn Theriault won Manager of the Year and Kristie Hilton won Civilian of the Year, both recognized for their enthusiasm and effectiveness in projects departmentwide.
