Garza struggles in 14-4 loss

PEORIA, Ariz. — Aaron Harang is starting to look sharp. Matt Garza never felt he had a chance to get comfortable.

Harang had his best outing of spring this spring, Chase Headley hit a grand slam and the San Diego Padres beat Garza and the Chicago Cubs 14-4 Saturday.

Harang trying to bounce back from three injury-plagued seasons with the Reds, pitched two-hit ball for 5 1-3 innings. He walked three.

"He's been throwing well his last couple of starts," Padres manager Bud Black said of Harang. "He's working on some mechanical things that he figured out before his last start. (Saturday) He put the exclamation mark on some things."

Garza struggled through three innings in his fourth start. He has a 9.88 ERA. Garza blamed a lack of footing for his landing leg on the pitcher's mound and said he had to come out of the game to keep from injuring a hamstring.

"I had to adjust my landing so many different times," Garza said. "As I got to my normal landing spot, it was just a dropoff. I was always overextending, that's why I got taken out."

For the Padres, former Cub Eric Patterson had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run, Orlando Hudson doubled twice and Cameron Maybin and Rico Noel hit solo homers in support of Harang.

Brad Hawpe added a two-run single in the fifth off the Cubs' Braden Looper, who gave up eight runs and eight hits in two innings. The Padres scores six runs off Looper in the sixth, including Headley's slam.

Headley is batting .433 (13 for 30) with eight RBIs in spring training.

"We had some good ABs all the way through, really," Black said. The Padres had 15 hits.

Max Ramirez hit a grand slam in the eighth inning off the Padres' Corey Luebke.

NOTES: Cubs manager Mike Quade plans to continue using pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Silva on the same day, as was the case Friday when both struggled against Cincinnati. They combined to give up 11 earned runs in 7 2-3 innings. But that could mean that Zambrano would pitch in a minor league game and Silva against major leaguers. Silva's ERA is 15.88 INF Augie Ojeda has been out with back spasms for more than a week and is "a ways away" from playing again, Quade said. Ojeda won't be available until at last the middle of next week at the earliest LHP Wade LeBlanc starts for the Padres Sunday against the Seattle Mariners.
