‘Yes’ to Maple Park tax rate extension

The village of Maple Park is asking voters to approve a request to extend an existing tax rate so that capital projects could be funded. Since the 1980s, the rate has cost a typical homeowner $50 to $100 a year, but it’s due to expire soon. Now, storm sewers need widening to prevent floods like those in 2008, and streets are showing neglect. Also, in the next couple of years, the state is expected to require upgrades to the wastewater system to meet current standards. In that case and without the tax extension, leaders say, residential fees would rise. So the village seeks to continue the tax rate indefinitely rather than let it expire. Having virtually no tax base, Maple Park — with a population of 1,300 and full-time staff of four — has few options to cut expenses and relies heavily on residential taxes. We support this request, not only for the benefit of current residents but so the village will be prepared for inevitable future growth.
