Memorial Day ceremony to honor Pearl Harbor's 70th anniversary

The 2011 Lombard Memorial Day program will be held at noon Monday, May 30 in the Sunken Garden at the Veterans Memorial in Common Park, at St. Charles and Grace.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the start of America's involvement in World War II. The Memorial Day Program will feature remarks from two veterans of WWII who served in the Pacific Theatre. In addition to the guest speakers, special recognition will be given to all those individuals who served our country during World War II.

Members of the Lombard posts of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion will be participating in the program. Members of Viet Now will be presenting the Field Cross Ceremony.

There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the Lombard Memorial Marker which contains the names of Lombard residents who served or were killed in the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam. (No Lombard residents are recorded as being killed in the Korean War.)

Boy and Girl Scouts are invited to attend and participate in the ceremonies. The Glenbard East High School Eastwind vocalists will be singing the national anthem and other musical selections.

The Memorial Day Committee is currently looking for residents who served during World War II between December 1941 and September 1945.

Please contact Scott Watkins at (630) 873-4440 or watkinss@villageoflombard.org to alert the committee of any Lombard residents who may be World War II veterans of this era.

In the event of severe weather the program will be held indoors at the Lombard Village Hall.
