Freund, Rodriguez earn MSL honor

Fremd senior Jeff Freund and Buffalo Grove junior Ian Rodriguez have been named boys swimmers of the year in their respective divisions of the Mid-Suburban League.

Freund, coached this season, by Kristen Newby, qualified for the state meet all four years in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing seventh in the event as a junior and 12th this season.

He was also a three-time sectional champion and a four-time champion Mid-Suburban League champ in that race.

Rodriguez went unbeaten in dual meets this season in the 100-yard backstroke and went on to claim MSL and sectional victories in that event.

He placed seventh in the state meet at New Trier in the backstroke in a personal best time of 50.95.

Rodriguez, a two-time state qualifier in the backstroke, is coached by Jamie Klotz.
