Who’s helping and how to help

In the wake of any disaster, including 9/11’s terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina and Haiti’s earthquake, businesses and residents come together to help victims. The latest need is in Japan, in the wake of earthquakes and tsunamis. Here’s a list of donors and how to donate:

Corporations:

Ÿ Chicago-based Boeing and its employees will contribute $2 million to the American Red Cross.

Ÿ The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, will match employee contributions to the American Red Cross, Save the Children and World Vision for relief efforts, $1-for-$1 up to $1,000 per employee. Verizon Wireless customers can make a $10 donation to their choice of 10 nonprofit organizations by sending a text message by texting the specific word to the organization’s designated short code: ADRA Relief: text SUPPORT to 85944; American Red Cross Relief: text RED CROSS to 90999; Convoy of Hope: text TSUNAMI or SUNAMI to 50555; GlobalGiving: text JAPAN to 50555; International Medical Corps: text MED to 80888; Mercy Corps: text MERCY to 25383; Salvation Army: text JAPAN to 80888; Save the Children Federation: text JAPAN or TSUNAMI to 20222; World Relief Corp. of National Association of Evangelicals: text WAVE to 50555; World Vision, Inc.: text 4 JAPAN or 4 TSUNAMI to 20222.

Ÿ Chicago-based United and Continental Airlines will provide a one-time mileage bonus to members of Mileage Plus and OnePass who contribute to American Red Cross. Members who give a minimum of $50 will receive 250 bonus miles and those who contribute $100 or more will be rewarded with 500 bonus miles.

Ÿ Northfield-based Kraft Foods Foundation is donating food and $200,000 to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Japan. All donations made by employees to the Red Cross will be matched by the foundation.

Ÿ Schaumburg-based Motorola Solutions Foundation has contributed $100,000 to the Red Cross and will match employee giving to the Red Cross up to $25,000.

Ÿ Libertyville Township-based Abbott Fund, the philanthropic arm of Abbott Laboratories, is providing $3 million to the Red Cross.

Ÿ Chicago-based Harris will give $100,000 to the Red Cross, through the bank’s parent company, BMO Financial Group. All Harris branches also will accept donations to the Red Cross and waive Harris’ wire transfer fee for customers sending money to affected individuals or agencies in Japan, starting March 15, through April 15.
