Loyola dismisses women’s soccer coach

Frank Mateus, head women’s soccer coach at Loyola University for the past six seasons, has been relieved of his duties, and a national search for his replacement is under way.

Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, the new Loyola director of athletics and assistant vice president, made the announcement. Earlier Monday, Calhoun dismissed men’s basketball coach Jim Whitesell.

Mateus was the third head coach in Loyola women’s soccer history. In six seasons at Loyola, Mateus compiled a 62-61-9 (.504) overall record, though the team had slipped to a 12-26-4 (.333) mark over the last two campaigns. The Ramblers recorded a 7-12-1 overall record in 2010.

“I want to thank Coach Mateus for his contributions to Loyola over the past six years and wish him success in future endeavors,” Calhoun said. “Loyola is currently making significant investments in athletics facilities, staffing and budgets. Those investments, coupled with new program leadership, will enable Rambler women’s soccer to regain its spot on top of the Horizon League standings in future years.”
