Grayslake Police Chief retiring

Grayslake Police Chief Larry Herzog has announced his plans to retire from the department after serving as chief for 13 years.

Herzog will retire in early July and looks forward to spending more time with his three children and eight grandchildren, according to a letter he wrote to Mayor Rhett Taylor.

“I am most proud of the many ways that the men and women of the Police Department have become highly committed to the residents, businesses, and students in Grayslake, and how they have become part of the community,” he wrote in the letter.

Herzog was appointed chief on July 1, 1998 after a 26-year career with the Park Ridge Police Department.

Both Taylor and Grayslake Village Manager Mike Ellis praised Herzog’s work as chief.

“Not only is our police department well recognized in the law enforcement community, but the citizens and businesses of Grayslake think highly of the department,” Taylor said in a news release. “Our organization will miss Larry’s experience and insights. We all wish him well in his retirement.”

During Herzog’s tenure, a new police station was opened in 2008 and the department began providing police services to the village of Hainesville. In his letter to Taylor, Herzog said he is leaving the post “with very mixed emotions”.

“He is irreplaceable and I know the entire staff will miss his advice, ideas and his great sense of humor,” Ellis said in the news release.

A replacement for Herzog has not been announced.
