Scouting the supersectionals

Class 4A

At Waukegan, 7:30 p.m.

Niles North (24-6) vs. Warren (29-3): Niles North looks to continue its unprecedented run behind 6-6 Abdel Nader (25 ppg), PG Malachi Nix and its pressure defense that fueled sectional comeback wins over Notre Dame and Schaumburg. Warren counters with balance and size led by 6-6 Darius Paul (11 ppg) and 6-8 Nathan Boothe (10 ppg) as it tries to get to Peoria for the first time since it was second in AA in 1999.

At DeKalb (NIU Convocation Center), 7:30 p.m.

Rockford Auburn (26-4) vs. Glenbard East (26-3): Last year was supposed to be Glenbard East's year but now it's here after navigating a rugged sectional road behind 6-3 Illinois State-bound Johnny Hill (21 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and NIU-bound PG Zach Miller (14 ppg, 9 apg). Auburn emerged from Boylan's shadow in Rockford this year to win the NIC-10 title and bounced back from a pair of losses at the buzzer in its last two Elgin Holiday Tournament games behind dynamic junior PG Fred Van Vleet (19 ppg, 8 apg, 5.5 spg)

At Hinsdale Central, 7:30 p.m.

Simeon (27-2) vs. Farragut (24-4): Defending 4A champion Simeon rebounded from losses to Whitney Young and Benet and is chasing its fourth title since 2006 behind 6-7 Jabari Parker (16 ppg, 8 rpg), one of the country's top sophomores, and junior Steve Taylor in Robert Smith's disciplined system. Farragut doesn't have the star power of Kevin Garnett and Ronnie Fields but has one of the Public League's top talents in 6-5 D.J. Tolliver (19 ppg, 10 rpg, 5 apg).

At Normal (ISU's Redbird Arena), 7:30 p.m.

Crete-Monee (25-3) vs. Normal Community (26-6): Neither team has been to the state finals before. Crete-Monee has Palatine junior transfer PG Michael Orris getting the ball to 6-4 DePaul recruit Jamee Crockett (22 ppg, 7 rpg) and 6-8 Greg Mays (Wisconsin-Green Bay). Normal will have the homecourt advantage and went unbeaten in the Big 12 with junior G and Division I prospect Anthony Beane (14 ppg) leading a balanced attack.

Class 3A

At Hoffman Estates, 7:30 p.m.

North Chicago (16-13) vs. Crane (23-3): North Chicago doesn't bring an impressive record to its third supersectional trip in four years but hopes a tougher schedule could lead to a breakthrough to Peoria behind junior G Aaron Simpson (23 ppg, 6 rpg, 4 apg). That includes a mid-January 74-68 loss to Crane where junior Kieran Woods scored 33. Kory Billups is also a threat as the Cougars look to return to Peoria for the first time since 2005.

At DeKalb (NIU Convocation Center), 6 p.m.

Aurora Central Catholic (17-13) vs. Rock Island (27-3): Perennial power Rock Island hasn't been to Peoria since 2000 but hopes to ride Mr. Basketball candidate and Stanford-bound Chasson Randle (22 ppg, 7 rpg) for a return trip. Can ACC continue its Cinderella run behind junior shot-blocking machine Robert DeMyers?

At Joliet Central, 7:30 p.m.

Brooks (24-3) vs. Lindblom (22-8): This has been a special season for Brooks and first-year coach Bobby Locke as the Chicago Public League champs have the dynamic backcourt of Wisconsin-bound George Marshall and Mike Powell (23 ppg). Lindblom has a tough task to get back to state for the first time since 1942 and won a pair of 2-point sectional games with a balanced attack.

At Springfield (Prairie Capitol Convention Center), 7:30 p.m.

Centralia (28-4) vs. Morton (25-7): Centralia, one of the state's most storied programs, is looking to get back to Peoria for the first time since 2002 when it was third in AA. R.J. Kwiatkowski leads the Orphans, who avenged a loss to state-ranked Breese Mater Dei in the regional final. Morton has never reached the state finals and its toughest test was upending state-ranked Lincoln in a regional opener behind 6-8 junior Brett Bisping (13.5 ppg, 8 rpg).
