Cameras making the roads safer

As a children’s safety organization, we are thrilled to see the results of the recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s study showing that the installment of intersection safety cameras reduced the number of traffic fatalities on our roads.

At Safe Kids Illinois, we support traffic safety programs that protect drivers, passengers and pedestrians from preventable injuries and fatalities. According to IIHS, intersection safety cameras saved 159 lives in 14 cities with camera safety programs, and could have potentially saved 815 if cameras were employed in 99 cities with populations over 200,000.

In Chicago, we see the positive impacts cameras have made: The IIHS study reported a 32 percent reduction in crash fatalities in Chicago over the five-year study period. Clearly, these cameras are an effective traffic safety program. Crash rates are down, and motorists are changing their driving habits.
